We hired outside contractors to put in the tiles, toilets and showers, said Hayes Robertson, the head of the county’s Class D program. The fifth floor has 15 showers and four new bathrooms. There is also a meeting room for inmates and their families and vending machines, washing machines and dryers. Chief Deputy Jailer Rodney Ballard pointed out that Melbourne Property Valuation the inmates converted the wooden doors from the judges’ chambers into tables for folded clothes in the laundry room. ”These inmates are innovative,” Ballard said.

Each inmate will have his own locker and bunk. And, unlike portions of the jail on the upper floors of the municipal building, the fifth-floor facility is spacious, has views of downtown Covington, and televisions in the corners. The costs of running the fifth-floor facility are offset by a day that Kenton County receives from the state for Class D inmates. Work-release county inmates are also asked to pay a day for room and board. Kenton County has talked for years about building a new jail because the existing one, which takes up several floors in the old courthouse, is crowded and has been the target of inmate lawsuits.
